Expo group & all that works!

Being in the expo group was one of the challenging job and responsibility ever! I had my group to thankful for giving me one of the biggest challenges and responsibility to learn and be part of this expo group. At the same time, I have learnt so much being part of the expo group as the only person who is responsible for finding the sponsorship to fund for the transportation for the Karlskrona students. Even though at the end, I wasn’t successfully achieved that goal I wanted to achieved by working on this by myself (of purse with helps from a few other people from the expo team, Nina (from DM13 KNA), and some great and handful people from our class and from my group).

During the time, I was also involved in the concept generation and idea generation, as well as promotional team, and on-site manager in the expo group. It took us 1.5 weeks to come up and conclude the idea and concept which we decided to be ‘Work Hard, Play Hard’ for the whole classes and for hyper students.

During the process, we have had many different ideas and degree of confusion and lack of structures and organization within the expo group. However, we all managed to do what we are assigned ourselves to and I’m glad that our exhibition has become such a successful event ever! I think we had approx. 300-400 guests attended our expo and getting to test out, play around, and experience all of our installations and even wanted to know more about our school.

‘Work Hard, Play Hard’

We, as students and expo team, had come a long way during these 5 weeks to the end of our expo and module session. Even if we didn’t reach at the highest level of our satisfaction among our installation and such, I do believed that we have learnt so much more about group dynamics and team work, trust among each other, understanding among the way we communicate among our groups and reflection among ourselves. I’ve got to say that this was one of the most unforgettable, valuable, and best-against-worse time and module ever in my life time studying at Hyper Island.

Finally, I’m really happy that the expo and the module has ended successfully! I’m so proud of my group and all people I’ve worked with and got helps from. There are so many talented people, with the good attitudes that I would wanna work with and I’m glad that I had a chance to get to know and work with them, at both professional and personal level (as we’ve become a really good friend & even better bonded as hyper family). I wish there will be more chance for me to work with these people who possess these right attitudes that I do believe that Hyper will be a great place for us all to learn and become more bonded in the near future.

Nevertheless, I just wanted to say ‘I’m so proud of you D-Pad and it’s been an honour to work with you guys. I do wish we will have a chance to work with you all again in the near future!’

wrapping it up

Ok, so a little late-night-time-alone-reflection to sum things up. So fuck it, we didn’t manage to get it to work for the major part of the expo, but I’m so proud of what we have achieved during these five weeks that “frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”. Our theories about this sudden malfunctioning are 1) the microcontroller (possibly the memory?) burned out during set-up/testing. 2) something went wrong with the prototype during transport. 3) both.

We spent hours troubleshooting onsite, until we realized that the problem was not mendable. Learning by failing. Now I’m just trying to cope with the fact that the world might never see LU/OX MESH in all it’s tremendous glory and also to remind myself that the most important thing about this project was not the end product, but the journey and the learnings on the way. I think it’s working. Oh well, we screened a nice japanese movie instead and then I got shitfaced on the party and apparently insulted a taxi-driver. C’est la vie!

Tomorrow is the expo and it’s getting late now… I have lost my voice and I’m going home now to try to get it back somehow, lots of tea and honey or something like that.

And yeah I’m superexcited to see the result, I trust my team-mates they are awesomenezzzz.

What we did next was to coat the installation, the coating was intoxicating and made us all dizzy, it’s good to have it done, then some in our group started with the soldering.

Let’s see how much we really have to do tomorrow, the day before “The day”.

Tired but really excited about all of the installations, can’t wait for the exhibition!

So we working with the floor. and its begin to take a shape! The thing is that other classes have lectures in studio 2 witch mean

1. either we have to move

2. or stay quiet for a while until they are done.

Because its friday we think they will head of early and make as the bumble-bee BUZZ OF.

Its now less than a week until everything has to be done and I am honest when I say I´m not that stressed that other people are.

today it was finalized! i’ve had some email contact with the clas ohlson store manager in Liljeholmen about sponsoring, and today he confirmed that they would sponsor our group in our project! me and Eleonora went there almost immediatley to pick up some materials. including LEDs, resistors, glossy papers, cords, to name a few. great success! and many thanks to clas ohlson!

Technical update aka "Love Fool"

Long time no see ms. internet blogish thing! My baby child arrived monday and she’s the hippest girl in the block.

IPAC-2 is the name of my amazing girl which was from the beginning meant to be used with arcade cabinets (MAME). It can handle 32 inputs simultaneously. This is compared to a regular I/O as a keyboard which can handle 4-5 inputs simultaneously included ghosting problems. Well, if we skip the technical terminology I can say that this is a beauty.

So. We are in a happy but crucial phase where we have all the technical aspects sorted out but we are still missing a complete code for the software. But for sure, we are not the one’s who give up that easily. Today we are looking into to complete building the floor (pictures will be up in the next update), geting some mapping problems sorted out, fix sponsorships from some partners, finishing the homepage etc. Everything is starting to look great!

A case of the mondays

Today we’ve done a lot of planning and researching materials and potential lupe holes to get free stuff (such as ordering free samples of things) and tomorrow is the day that we begin to get our hands dirty for real!
Ebbe and Jocke where off to get some free wood from Blocket and came back with plenty, so we hope we can use some of it. With that and the help of Matilda’s secret tool-stash she has at home, we think we can cook something up.

Tomorrow is the day we’re gonna start building the prototype for the LU/OX MESH floor. Jocke is the one who’s gonna do the blueprint for the whole thing, Linn is going to help with the floor with some of her awesome unicorn powers, Elenora is going to start on the visuals, Ebbel33th4xX0r is going to start haxxing sum codez, Matilda’s gonna start on the website and hopefully finish the same day or the day after, and Clairbear’s gonna work her magic to continue her work at the Expo-group.

This week we’ve been working hard on finishing the graphic profile, AND we have chosen a name for the project: LU/OX (MESH). LU/OX is a mash up between two latin words: VOX (which means sound/voice) and LUX (light), and MESH for the grid system which we use on the floor and in the software.

To show of the grid I came up with the idea of using 3d mesh-inspired visuals in the logotype. The graphic profile turned out really nice, and I think I can talk for the rest of the group when I say that we love the result:

Follow-ups process session with Lena Nellgren

After some problem with overslept group members and not exactly knowing about what we where going to do we finally got in contact with Lena Nellgren who was supposed to help us with the our group dynamic. We did consider either if Claire would stay in the group or she would go to the Expo team. After some back and forth the group decided that she should stay and we all agreed that is was a good idea. Lena who said she was working with big companies with communication problem asked every single one in the group some small questions about them selves and what they felt in the group during these weeks we been working.

After everybody told Lena their feelings and thoughts about the group we started to discuss what we wanted and what our expectations was. We talked about how to implement our way to think in the group process and where we wanted to move on during this two last week we are working. Lena gave us some advice and her question helped us to reflect in another way that we didn’t do before.

I felt it was necessary that we shared how we felt and what we want to be better at and what we expect from our group!
